Game of Thrones: The Red Woman

April 27, 2016 by Nicole Tessela

I believe a most fitting way to start off this blog and get everyone into the swing of things with the theme weeks is to begin with Game of Thrones. After all, what better way is there then to celebrate the season six premiere aptly titled The Red Woman. It just so happens that the first look I had planned to do was Melisandre not knowing what the episode would be called. I'd like to think of that as a very fitting sign.

I have come to both love and hate her as a character but mostly I have to always appreciate a powerful redhead. She is cunning and manipulative and Carice van Houten plays her flawlessly. The most interesting thing to me is although there is a lot of nudity in Game of Thrones in general Melisandre never seems naked. I tend to feel like the very act of bearing herself is in itself a weapon. In that aspect she feels like one of the more dangerous women in Westeros.

Many called her beautiful. She was not beautiful. She was red, and terrible, and red.

I wanted to change her look up from the show but of course be greatly inspired by the character and how Carice portrays her. So really, as red and fire-like as possible while keeping to that natural beauty as much as possible. So, a bit stripped down as well. The look needed to be manipulative with a slight hint of vulnerability as a disguise.

Lady Melisandre wore no crown, but every man there knew that she was Stannis Baratheon’s real queen.

"Half my knights are afraid even to say her name, did you know? If she can do nothing else, a sorceress who can inspire such dread in grown men is not to be despised. A frightened man is a beaten man. And perhaps she can do more. I mean to find out.…
